TELL ME ABOUT HILL ST BAKING MIXES
So, what's the deal with Hill St Wholefoods?
At Hill Street we’ve developed a range of mixes that turn our favourite sweet treats into easy to make, mouthwatering wholefood masterpieces.
We’ve ignored over-processed ingredients and popped nutritious, plant-based ones in their place. We’ve ditched the dairy, got rid of gluten and catered for vegans - we’ve even whisked away the refined sugar hangover.
We’ve made it so simple, all you have to do is add a couple of wet ingredients and everyone you serve will think you’ve got Nigella locked in the kitchen.
Are Hill St mixes gluten free?
All Hill Street Wholefoods baking mixes are gluten free and suitable for Celiacs (we wouldn't want you to miss out!). We periodically test for gluten in our products to be sure we continuously deliver a product that is safe for those that can't consume gluten. Hill St Bases baking mixes are not gluten free.
Are Hill St baking mixes dairy free?
Hill St Baking Mixes are dairy free, with the exception of the Bases Choc Chunk Cookie mix. When adding milk or yoghurt to our mixes opt for non-dairy alternatives such as almond milk and coconut yoghurt.
Are Hill St baking mixes refined sugar free?
In our Hill St Wholefoods baking mixes we don't use refined sugar (cane sugar or brown sugar). Instead we opt to sweeten our wholefoods range with coconut sugar. Our organic coconut sugar is minimally processed which means it retains a large quantity of nutrients compared to more processed sugars. Coconut sugar contains vitamins, electrolytes, minerals and also has a much lower GI score (around 35) than standard sugar.
Are Hill St baking mixes vegan?
All mixes with the exception of the Bases Choc Chunk Cookie Baking Mix are vegan friendly. Our suggested ingredients aren't all vegan but are easily substituted for your favourite vegan friendly ingredients. Here are a couple of suggested substitutes to get you started.
- Milk - substitute for almond, soy or coconut mylk. Butter - substitute for dairy free spread.
- Coconut Oil - substitute for equal parts butter (convert ml into grams) Yoghurt - substitute for coconut yoghurt (we love Raglan Coconut Yoghurt and Cathedral Cove Coconut Yoghurt)
- Eggs - To replace one egg, whisk together 1 tablespoon of ground chia or flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of hot water and leave for 10-15 mins until fully absorbed and thickened. We also love using aquafaba (the liquid in a can of chickpeas) as an egg substitute. To replace one egg use 3 Tbsp of whisked aquafaba (it should be foamy, not whipped).
Do Hill St baking mixes contain nuts?
Our Hill St Bases range and Hill St Wholefoods Seed Cracker are free of all types of nuts.
The Hill St Wholefoods mixes contain almonds and the Choc Peanut Butter Afghans contain Peanut Butter Sachets.
There are no peanuts in our mixes aside from the Afghans and no peanuts are handled in our production facility so if you have a peanut allergy you can rest easy and enjoy your Hill St goodies.
All our mixes are produced in a facility that handles tree nuts.
I'm a total newbie when it comes to baking, will I be able to make these?
Absolutely! We’ve made it so simple, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the back of the pack, add a couple of wet ingredients and wait for the compliments and new friends to roll in.
We have also compiled a handy list of tips we have learned along the way. Check them out here.
How long will my Hill St treats last?
Assuming your baking isn't eaten in one sitting (we don't judge), here is a guide of how long they will last when stored:
- Cakes: up to 3 days in an airtight container in the pantry.
- Slices / Brownies: 2-3 days in an airtight container in the pantry and up to 1 week in an airtight container in the fridge.
- Cookies: up to 1 week in an airtight container in the pantry.
- Scones / Flatbreads: best eaten fresh or the next day.
- Pancakes: up to 3 days in a sealed container in the fridge.
What is the shelf life of Hill St mixes?
The best before date is 12 months from when the mix was produced.
